Sweet Potato Pizza Crust – Gluten-free, Yeast-free, Vegan

Sweet potato pizza crust with only 5 ingredients. This is a healthy pizza crust that is gluten-free, vegan (dairy-free, egg-free), yeast-free, quick, and easy to make. Okay, I love pizza. You know what I mean, real Italian pizza with fluffy crust, tomato sauce, a lot of cheese on the top…yummy. I’m married to an Italian and I’m a master pizza maker. But I have endometriosis and because of it my life is more complicated. I can’t eat gluten, dairy….Sometimes I feel like I’m the most boring person ever! For me right now my focus is to eat healthy, following endometriosis diet, but to also satisfy my food cravings, so I don’t overeat. If I’m eating vegetables – I’m more than happy with my diet. Even if sometimes those vegetables come together with pizza, vegan one of course. This tasty sweet potato pizza crust recipe is vegan and it’s totally worth the 40 minutes because it’s very delicious and it’s healthy-ish. I like it and I really want to share it.

HEALTHY SWEET POTATO PIZZA CRUST

I adore pizza – what I don’t adore is the guilt associated with traditional pizza. Pizza can be a very healthy meal — even made on a standard crust, it’s topped with tomato sauce and protein-rich cheese. What makes it unhealthy is taking a white flour crust, topping it with way too much cheese, and then layering on processed meats. If you want to make a pizza witch is much healthier than a regular pizza, then try out this sweet potato pizza crust. This is the best vegan pizza I’ve ever tried. Why is it healthier than a regular pizza crust? 1. It contains sweet potatoes that are loaded with beta-carotene, vitamins & minerals, and fiber. 2. The crust is yeast-free, so if you have a yeast intolerance, this recipe is perfect for you. 3. The crust is gluten-free and therefore great for celiacs.

HOW TO MAKE A SWEET POTATO PIZZA CRUST?

I love this sweet potato pizza crust recipe because it’s simple and easy to make! Only 5 ingredients. All you need is a cup of mashed sweet potato, two different flours, baking powder, salt, a baking tray, and two sheets of parchment paper. Of course, you will also need an oven and your favorite pizza toppings. This sweet potato pizza crust actually is easier to make than a standard pie crust! No rising. First, I boil the sweet potato for about 15-20 minutes. Once you have your sweet potato boiled, discard the water and mash it with a potato masher. Let it cool for half an hour. Add rice flour, corn starch, baking powder, salt and a pinch of black pepper, and then mix the ingredients well. Once the mixture cooled down a little bit, use your hands to knead the pizza dough into a ball. If the dough is too dry, add a tiny bit of water or oil. If it’s too sticky, add more rice flour. The tricky part is getting the sticky dough to form a nice pizza shape. Scoop your sweet potato “dough” onto a parchment-lined baking tray. I lightly wet the top of the dough with wet fingers, and then use another piece of parchment on top. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into your preferred shape (about 0,7-1 cm thick). Remove the top parchment paper and transfer the rolled out pizza dough (including the bottom sheet of parchment paper) onto a baking sheet. Bake the pizza dough in the oven for about 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, you can prepare your pizza toppings! After 15-20 minutes, remove the pizza dough from the oven. Add the second parchment paper on top, and carefully flip the pizza dough over. Please don’t burn your fingers! If the crust is too hot, simply wait a few minutes. Now, peel back the hot parchment paper. Next, top your sweet potato pizza crust with your favorite marinara sauce or jarred pizza sauce. Make your own if you’re feeling up to it! Add vegan cheese if you’d like. Return the pizza to the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes. After the sweet potato pizza crust has baked, it is quite firm. The outside of the crust gets nice and crunchy. The perfect healthy sweet potato pizza crust for hand-holding your pizza! Enjoy! The other night I loaded our sweet potato pizza crust up with zucchini, red bell peppers, spinach, and basil, and vegan cheese. The perfect vegan pizza, loaded with so many veggies I didn’t feel the need to serve a salad on the side. It was delicious — but because I had topped it with so many ingredients, it took 25 minutes to bake.

FREEZER FRIENDLY SWEET POTATO PIZZA CURST

Yes, you can pre-bake the crust and freeze it! I would recommend making smaller pizzas (for example use one dough to make 2 smaller pizzas) Make extra crusts, and after they’ve cooled, freeze them in a freezer ziplock bag. I place a piece of baking paper between each crust, and then when I’d like to make one, I can just pull it out and place it on a baking tray. Freeze for up to 3 months. As soon as you want to eat pizza, grab one crust out of the freezer and bake it in the oven for 10-15 minutes, then top and bake for an additional 10 to 20 minutes until crispy.

Sweet Potato Pizza Crust

Sweet potato pizza crust recipe with only 5 ingredients. This is a healthy pizza crust that is gluten-free, vegan (dairy-free, egg-free), yeast-free, quick, and easy to make.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 25 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sweet potato from boiled sweet potatoes 235 g
  • 120 g white rice flour
  • 40 g corn starch
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • salt

Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 375 F
(200 C). Peel, dice (to about ½” pieces), and measure out your
Sweet Potato. I recommend using a food scale for best results.
    2. Boil it in a pot with water
for about 10 minutes or until fork-tender. Discard the water and mash
the sweet potato with a potato masher (I used the same pot). You'll
need 1 cup (235 g) of mashed sweet potato for this recipe.
    3. Add rice flour, corn
starch, baking powder + salt and mix with a spoon. Once the mixture
cooled down a little bit, use your hands to knead the pizza dough
into a ball. If the dough is too dry, add a tiny bit of water or oil.
If it's too sticky, add more rice flour.
    4. Next, place the dough ball
between two sheets of parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to flatten
the dough into a circle about ⅓-½” thick, then peel back the top
layer of parchment paper. Transfer the dough + bottom layer of
parchment paper to a baking sheet, then bake for 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, you can prepare your pizza toppings!
    5. After 10 minutes, remove
the pizza dough from the oven. Add the second parchment paper on top,
and carefully flip the pizza dough over. Please don't burn your
fingers! If the crust is too hot, simply wait a few minutes. Now,
peel back the hot parchment paper.
    6. Place your favorite
toppings onto the sweet potato crust and return the pizza to the oven
for about 15 to 20 minutes. If you just add a few toppings like
cheese and olives (for example) the pizza will be ready much faster then if you add lots of different veggies.
