What is face toner?

A homemade facial toner is a combination of ingredients that are used for many reasons. Toners are great for freshening the skin, removing leftover makeup after cleansing, and priming the skin for serums and moisturisers. A DIY toner helps to remove dead cells from the surface of your skin.

A toner is one skincare product you may already use in your skincare routine but know little about. It’s to be used after you have washed your fave and before applying serum or moisturizer.

How to make face toner

You can make several different forms of face toner at home using different ingredients in your kitchen. I’m going to share my favourite green tea toner recipe.

Face toner is meant to be used daily. This DIY face toner is made with green tea, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice. This DIY green tea toner recipe can be used twice daily for your morning and night routines. This simple recipe is suitable for oily skin and acne-prone skin. The tannins in green tea have astringent properties, which can help shrink pores and reduce oil production.

In case of skin irritation, start by applying the toner once a day and see how your skin handles the product. Gradually increase the amount to 2 times and see if your skin adapts.

Since swapping out my morning coffee for green tea, I’ve found that my sleep has improved immensely and that my anxiety has felt more manageable. So, I definitely will be keeping up this new routine!

After a little research, I discovered that YES – green tea can be great for your skin. Green tea can help improve acne, balance oils in the skin, and reduce puffiness.

Skincare Benefits of Green Tea

Having a cup of green tea every morning before breakfast got me thinking about all its benefits. Green tea contains many health benefits for the skin. It can provide sun protection, help reduce inflammation and increase the skin’s elasticity. Green tea facial toner can cleanse and reduce the appearance of pores and give your skin a youthful glow. The molecule responsible for green tea’s amazing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant abilities is catechin—specifically, one called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) [source]. You’ll find this ingredient highlighted in many green tea-based skincare natural products, but you don’t need to buy one that’s premade to benefit from this naturally potent antioxidant!

Is Green Tea Toner Good for Face?

After some research, I discovered that YES – green tea can be great for your face and skin. On healthline.com they noted that green tea can help improve acne, balance oils in the skin, and reduce puffiness.

No More Puffy Eyes

Remove the green tea bag once you steep your tea and chill in the fridge.  Lay down and apply it to your under-eye area. This will soothe any puffiness and reduce the appearance of dark circles.

Shrink Large Pores and Minimize Fine Lines

Pour a cup of green tea into an ice cube tray. The next time you look tired or stressed, pop a green tea cube out and run it under your eyes and around your face. This will reduce the size of large pores and firm skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and crowfeet.

Green tea face toner ingredients

This DIY Green Tea Facial toner is super simple. It consists of just green tea, tea tree oil, and sometimes, you can add Witch Hazel. But, if I don’t have Witch Hazel on hand, I combine the green and tea tree oil.

I like adding tea tree oil as it helps fight acne (my current nemesis) and can reduce the look of redness and inflammation in the skin.

Witch Hazel also helps clear the skin of acne by reducing inflammation.  In addition, it’s said that Witch Hazel may be anti-aging and tighten pores.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is great for acne. It cleanses and tones skin, fighting bacteria that can cause acne. It also shrinks the size of pores and keeps skin at an optimal pH balance, helping dry and oily skin types. The acid in lemon juice can irritate some, so diluting it with other things is always good. But the same acid is what gives it the gentle exfoliating effect on the skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar wonders at balancing the skin’s pH, which helps prevent and reduce acne as well as help achieve a more even complexion. It also helps to exfoliate the skin gently.

Green Tea

This tea is a powerful anti-ageing ingredient that firms skin and de-puffs. Green tea protects the skin from free radicals and has high antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

It also helps fine lines and wrinkles look smaller. It also soothes mild acne and evens the complexion. This DIY face toner feels great on the skin, as some facial toners do without drying it out.

It is a simple green tea face toner recipe and very cheap.

How to make a green tea toner

  • 1 teacup of water
  • 1 packet of green tea (or 1 tsp green tea leaves)
  • juice of a half lemon
  • 1/4 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2-3 drops of tea tree essential oil (optional)
  1. Brew green tea using 1 tea bag in 1 cup of hot water for 2–3 minutes to maximize the antioxidants. Then, let cool and strain.
  2. Once it is done steeping, remove the tea bags and pour the tea into a container. I use a little mason jar to keep it in.
  3. Once you have mixed your tea, pour 1/4 tsp of lemon juice into the tea and mix well.
  4. Next, add 1/4 tsp of apple cider vinegar + the essential oils into a glass bottle (or a small jar) and close it. Give a good shake or two, and voila! You have a perfect and easy acne toner.
  5.  If you want this as a facial mist, skip the cotton ball and pour the toner into a small spray bottle.

How to use green tea face toner

When I wash my face each night, I pour a little onto a cotton pad and wipe it over the clean skin. Then, I wait a few minutes to let it dry and penetrate before adding my moisturizer and massaging it into the skin.

Does green tea toner need to be refrigerated?

You do have to keep the toner refrigerated, and you can use it for up to 7 days before tossing any leftovers and making a new batch. You can also add a natural preservative if you want it to last longer at room temperature.
