If you are just starting your own journey towards a healthier lifestyle and want to ditch the chemicals, making your own body scrub is a great first step.
By choosing the right ingredients and essential oils, you can create different body scrubs at home that exfoliate and moisturize your skin without a greasy feeling.
Tips for making a homemade grapefruit sugar scrub
If you want to get all the therapeutic benefits coconut oil offers it’s best not to use fractionated coconut oil (the liquid one). Just melt regular coconut oil to the right consistency if that’s what type of oil you are using.
Vitamin E oil is optional, it helps homemade sugar scrubs last longer without chemical preservatives.
I don’t recommend using brown sugar for this scrub because the scent would be overpowering with this particular combination.
You can use grapefruit essential oil instead of fresh grapefruit juice.
What are the grapefruit essential oil benefits?
Grapefruit essential oil helps everything from reducing blood pressure and providing stress relief to treating and protecting your skin.
- Antibacterial and antimicrobial effects
- Helps to reduce stress
- Can treat acne
- Reduces sugar craving
- Works as a natural energizer and mood booster

This grapefruit sugar scrub is a staple in my natural fall skincare routine. With an all-natural, I created a wonderfully fragrant grapefruit sugar scrub recipe.
Here are the ingredients need to make DIY grapefruit sugar scrub at home:
sugar – may not be the perfect ingredient for your health and diet, but a sugar scrub can be very good for your skin. Sugar can also help you achieve clearer skin. The gentle abrasion of a sugar scrub removes damaged or dead skin cells and unclogs pores. This helps prevent many skin issues such as blackheads, skin blemishes, breakouts, and acne.
avocado oil – like most oils, avocado is known for its moisturizing and nourishing properties. It is an excellent source of enrichment for dry, damaged, or chapped skin. Avocado oil is heavy in texture, yet soothing and leaves no greasy residue.
Grapefruit – contains a good amount of Vitamin A and C. It is rich in minerals, antioxidants and has high water content. It keeps your skin’s outer layer hydrated. Vitamin C and antioxidants protect the skin from environmental hazards. Stimulates the production of skin collagen which makes skin smooth, plump, and increases elasticity.
grapefruit essential oil – Grapefruit essential oil helps everything from reducing blood pressure and providing stress relief to treating and protecting your skin.
lavender essential oil – can clear your pores and cleanse the skin. It possesses antibacterial components that can kill acne-forming bacteria. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness and inflammation, which are often caused by acne.
DIY Grapefruit Scrub Recipe
Try this gentle facial scrub to brighten dull skin, rid those dead skin cells and fight the winter skin blues. Then see how much more effective your other skincare steps will be!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sugar (the finer the grit the better)
- ½ fresh grapefruit juice
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 3 tbsp avocado oil (or coconut oil)
- 1/2 tsp vitamin E oil (optional)
Mix sugar and avocado oil together. Next slowly pour in the juice – mix it and see how saturated you’ll like it to be. I prefer body scrubs to be a little moist, so it’s not too rough on the skin. Mix and add lavender essential oil. Store in an airtight container.
How to Use Your Grapefruit Sugar Scrub
This fragrant grapefruit sugar scrub will keep your skin radiant all through fall and winter and is a great sugar scrub recipe for legs! There are several ways to use this easy sugar scrub recipe. Here are a few tips about how to use sugar scrub to exfoliate your skin:
Use the grapefruit scrub in the shower. Exfoliating in the shower is by far my favorite way to exfoliate arms, legs, and body. Wet your skin with warm water. Then massage small amounts of scrub on your skin. Rinse off with plenty of water. So relaxing!
Scoop a small amount of the Grapefruit Scrub in your hands with a spoon. Scrub all over your feet – or wherever you’d like a little extra softness. Allow the scrub to sit on your skin for 3-4 minutes. Enjoy this time to rest and relax. Rinse well and then pat dry with a soft towel.
