Why It’s Time to Make Your Own Pumpkin Spice Scrub?
I’m not here to convince you that making your own skincare products is the best choice in your life. I just want to share with you my personal reasons to go all-natural.
The first reason why I started making my own creams and body scrubs were to avoid harmful substances.
I had converted to natural products, in an effort to reduce my toxin levels, optimize liver function, and reduce excess chemicals that mimic hormones and so blamed it on the changes in skincare.
Commercial cosmetics (all those luxury and store-bought fancy skincare products) are usually laden with chemicals and preservatives which are harmful.
Many of them contain hormone disrupters, like Parabens, paraffin, ETDA to name a few.
The problem is that a lot of these toxins mimic Estrogen, which isn’t a good full stop let alone for someone who suffers from Endo (endometriosis and high levels of estrogen have been linked).
Some are referred to as endocrine disruptors, meaning hormone-altering crap lol. If your body is already high in estrogen, and then you add an estrogen-mimicking chemical to your body – your hormones are going to sky-rocket causing your symptoms to worsen!
For many years, I have been using only natural, organic, and chemical-free cosmetics. My skin reacts immediately to any kind of disturbance. I’m extremely sensitive to toxins, gluten, and dairy too.
So, if you’ve been wanting to make your own pumpkin spice sugar scrub with essential oils for some time keep reading.
Another reason was to omit all those plastics and packaging.
The third reason was to cut some costs.

How Do You Make a Pumpkin Scrub
The whole process of making your own body scrub is fairly simple and straightforward. Combine together sugar (white or brown) and botanicals (if you use), place into a food processor, and blend until combine and the botanical will be dispersed.
Next, prepare the oil phase. Chose your carrier oil, mix with essential oils, and vitamin E into a jar or a small mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
Mix the sugar scrub. Pour the oils over the sugar and combine.
Store the sugar scrub. Transfer the sugar scrub into airtight glass jars or storage containers and store sealed until ready to use.
What you will love about this pumpkin spice brown sugar scrub is that the recipe is easily customizable. This pumpkin spice sugar scrub recipe uses ingredients that are already shelf-stable.
My suggestion is to play around with the ingredients until you find the scent and texture of your liking. I like a less oily scrub but you could easily increase the almond oil for a thinner scrub texture. Also, adjust the pumpkin spice and cinnamon by a tsp or two if you prefer a stronger scent.
As such, you can store yours for about six months. You won’t believe how easy this is to make!
Want the perfect cure for the hustle and bustle of the holiday season?
This simple Pumpkin Spice Brown Sugar Scrub definitely has you covered! It smells amazing and smooths and pampers your rough spots with ease. (And it smells like pumpkin pie, what could be better!)
If you are just starting your own journey towards a healthier lifestyle and want to ditch the chemicals, making your own body butter and body cream is a great first step.
What Sugar is Best for Scrubs?
There are three main types of sugar you can choose from when making homemade sugar scrubs. Personally, I tend to stick with pure cane sugar, with brown sugar coming in second. Pure cane sugar is just right for my skin type, but I encourage you to try the different types to see what works best for your skin type.
Brown Sugar is a natural exfoliate that helps to moisturize and even skin tone. As the main ingredient, our brown sugars make for the perfect addition to your homemade body scrubs.
Pure cane sugar is good for all skin types and contains essential nutrients to feed the skin. It can be used 2 – 3 times per week.
Turbinado sugar (raw) is an excellent addition to body scrubs. The crystals, coarser than those of refined sugar, help exfoliate dead skin cells without the damage that can result from heavy salts or pulverized nut shells or fruit pits, which can have sharp edges.
What Kind of Coconut Oil is Best for a Pumpkin Sugar Scrub
I prefer to use organic non-fractionated virgin coconut oil (the soft, slightly solid kind) because it contains the therapeutic benefits you’re looking for in a scrub. Those benefits include reducing inflammation and keeping skin moisturized.
Also, it contains antimicrobial properties that can help treat acne and protect the skin from harmful bacteria.
How to choose Essential oils for pumpkin spice sugar scrub
Now for this pumpkin spice scrub, you’ll want to use about 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice. That will give you a pleasant but not overwhelming pumpkin spice fragrance.
But for this easy pumpkin spice sugar scrub recipe, you can also use essential oils. While they aren’t necessary, adding them can turn your body scrub from being simply moisturizing to something that really addresses what is going on with your skin.
Here are the essential oils for DIY pumpkin spice sugar scrub:
- 2 drops cinnamon leaf
- 1 drop nutmeg
- 1 drop ginger
- 1 drop cardamom
- 1 drop sweet orange
This sugar scrub smells fantastic even without essential oils. If you are pregnant, react sensitive to essential oils or want to use the scrub for small children, make the sugar scrub without essential oils. You will still get an amazing homemade all-natural sugar scrub with pumpkin spice.
