Homemade Coconut Oil Body Butter

Using body butter is a luxurious way to moisturize and soften your skin. This homemade coconut oil body butter is the best one I’ve ever tried, and it couldn’t be easier to make!

You know how sometimes you see a recipe and think… oh yeah, that sounds nice… but then never actually make it. Please don’t do that with this one.

This homemade coconut oil body butter is pure gold – and honestly – I think you’re going to love what it does for your skin!

I made my first batch of homemade whipped body butter almost a year ago. I think my life has changed forever. Delightful, decadent, and easy, I have wanted to try making it for a long time. I was convinced that it would be difficult and not work the way I wanted. Boy, was I wrong.

I love creamy body butter. Living in a climate that gets really cold in the winter and dry and hot in the summer, they are a must in my house. But two things have always bothered me. They can be quite expensive and also, full of ingredients that are less than desirable for your skin and health.

We often forget that our skin is the largest organ on our body and absorbs what we put on it. If you are using lotions and body butter with chemicals in them (fragrances, preservatives, color additives, etc.) be aware that your skin absorbs the chemicals, too. Not exactly desirable. I often just use almond oil on my skin after a shower but sometimes I want something a little more decadent. Body butters, made with pure oils and essential oils for fragrance are just the thing.

I always had dry skin, not too much dry, but sometimes I’ve been ashamed to put on some shorts and go out. If I didn’t put any lotion my legs would look like cracked up the earth. My skin just feels tight and looks kinda flaky. That’s why after my tips on how to moisturize your skin naturally now I’m sharing with you my favorite homemade coconut oil body butter recipe.

This time I wanted to use rose essential oil, because God I love how it smells. I didn’t have any rose essential oil so I added fresh rose flowers (I have many flowers in my garden) as the oils were cooling. I also stirred in the coconut oil at this point. Once the oil was cool, I strained out the rose flowers, added geranium essential oil (just a few drops) and left it cool a bit more. Because that step is really really important.

WHY HOMEMADE COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER IS THE SUPERIOR MOISTURIZER

Homemade body butter, is hands down, the nicest thing that you can do for your skin. Unlike store-bought moisturizers and lotions, body butters don’t contain preservatives and are very nourishing.

You can use whatever oils you wish, just make sure you keep the ratio 75% solid to 25% liquid.

The chilling step is crucial. If you don’t chill it properly, it won’t whip or stay whipped. About 20 minutes in the freezer usually does the trick for this batch. Make sure you scrape down the sides before mixing.

Since this recipe does not contain any water, it will not mold. You should keep in a cool place but it does not have to be refrigerated.

I do not know the exact shelf life but I know it will keep at least a few months, plus.

The body butter melts as it goes on and gets a little oily but absorbs beautifully, quickly, and leaves your skin very soft.

All of these scents make an amazing body butter that’s creamy, and leaves your legs moisturized and smooth!

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup shea butter
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 8-10 drops rose essential oil

Instructions:

  • Combine all ingredients in a double boiler.
  •  Heat until everything is melted.
  • Place in the refrigerator and let it cool for an hour.
  • When the mixture is starting to solidify around the edges, place in your stand mixer and mix on high.  It should start forming into a whip cream type consistency in about 5 minutes.

Store the Body Butter in a glass container for up to six months!

Note: Due to gravity, your homemade coconut oil body butter may lose some of its airiness over time. If that happens, simply use your hand mixer to re-whip it until it achieves your desired consistency.

HOW TO USE YOUR HOMEMADE COCONUT OIL BODY BUTTER

Rub the whipped body butter mixture over your skin, allowing a few moments for the heat from your skin to melt the oils. (I like to put in on after I get out of the shower, so it can “soak in” while I finish drying my hair and getting dressed.)

Apply as often as desired for softer, more moisturized skin.
